"Data Modelling with Graphs" by Stefan Armbruster
Abstract
Neo4j is a powerful and expressive tool for storing, querying and manipulating data. However modelling data as graphs is quite different from modelling data under with relational databases. In this talk we’ll cover modelling business domains using graphs and show how they can be persisted and queried in the popular open source graph database Neo4j. We'll contrast this approach with the relational model, and discuss the impact on complexity, flexibility and performance. We'll also discuss strategies for deciding how to proceed when a graph allows multiple ways to represent the same concept, and explain the trade-offs involved. Depending on remaining time, we'd like to do hands on modelling for a attendee's suggested use case.
Bio
Stefan works as Field Engineer for Neo Technology, the company sponsoring open-source development of Neo4j. He knows Neo4j for 5 years now and has seen a lot of projects using graph technology. He's based in Munich, Germany. Aside from coding in the java ecosystem, he is a passionate Linux veteran since the kernel 1.0.x days and when not coding, he cycles and is a volunteer firefighter at the local fire department, acting as team lead and instructor. He's all geek and loves technology, good food and wine.
"Distributed Search with Yokozuna" by Joel Jacobson & Matthew Revell
Abstract
Riak is a solid, highly-available, distributed data store and Solr, a well established search technology. These combined; we introduce Yokozuna.
Yokozuna is an extension of Riak that tightly integrates Riak with Solr. Riak stores the data and Solr indexes it. In this talk we will give a tour of Yokozuna: explaining how it works, discuss some challenges faced, show how it can be used, and perhaps compare it to similar solutions.

Bio Joel Jacobson
Joel is a Technical Evangelist at Basho Technologies, where he helps build the Riak community across Europe. Prior to joining Basho, Joel worked closely with Neo Technologies as part of his role at the consultancy OpenCredo.

Bio Matthew Revell
Looking after the Riak community in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Matthew works at Basho's London office. He has been active in the open source community for the past twelve years and is excited to see the new breed of schema-free databases take their place in businesses.
