"ELK: Elasticsearch, Logstash & Kibana" by Jettro Coenradie
Abstract
Logs are boring, everybody uses logs in his application but when we need them they are so hard to be useful. Using grep over a multitude of logfiles that have complete different format is not helping to find the root cause of problems. The resolution for too many logs is using log levels and log less. Of course the bad part is that you will not have the nice debug statements when you need them most. The alternative is a system that can help you get the best out of your logs without using grep. That is where logstash comes in. With logstash you can gather lots of different logs from different sources. You can change or enhance the logs using logstash and then send them somewhere. The past few years a new datastore was created to search in content. It was created to handle massive amounts of data and still search through it rapidly. Of course I am talking about Elasticsearch. Then the only thing we are missing is a way to present all this data, a way to effectively handle all this power. Meet Kibana.
At the end of this presentation/demo you will have a good idea about what the ELK stack can do for you. You should be ready to start experimenting with these technologies yourself.
Haven't heard of Elasticsearch yet? You're missing out on something! It's generating 500k downloads each month, so grab this opportunity to get up to speed.
Bio
Jettro Coenradie is a Software Architect at Trifork Amsterdam. He has been delivering applications for over 15 years. In these years Jettro has learned the importance of a close connection between development and operations. Therefore he is a strong believer in the devops movement. One type of handover from development to operations is documentation, but the best one is good logs. Jettro likes to try out new stuff. That is why he recently got his motorcycle drivers license. On a motor bike you tend to explore different routes to get the best our of your bike and have fun while doing the thing you need to do, get from A to B. When exploring new technologies he also likes to explore new routes to find better and more interesting ways to accomplish his goal. Jettro rides an all terrain bike, he does not like riding the same ground over and over again. The same is valid for his technical interest, he knows about backend (elasticsearch, mongodb, spring data, spring integration) as well as front-end (AngularJS, Sass, Less) and mobile development (iOS, Sencha touch).
