"Making the first step towards Mars" by B. Lansdorp, S. Johann & B. Voorbach

Abstract
Bas will share his ‘big’ plans for the Red Planet, where Mars One will take humanity to Mars in 2023, to establish the foundation of a permanent settlement from which we will prosper, learn, and grow. Before the first crew lands, Mars One will have established a habitable, sustainable settlement designed to receive new astronauts every two years. To accomplish this, Mars One has developed a precise, realistic plan based entirely upon existing technologies. It is both economically and logistically feasible, in motion through the aggregation of existing suppliers and experts in space exploration.

Mars One will start the online astronaut selection process the first half of 2013. Mars One expects applications from people from all over the world, who want to be part of the first mission to Mars. Applicants can publish part of their astronaut application online. These profiles, including a 1 minute video, will be publicly accessible through MarsOne's website.
We will also share some technical insight into the programming model behind the astronaut registration process and the public website as well as the SaaS and PaaS solutions they are using to meet internet-scale video streaming, world-wide data distribution and how they automatically scale in and out, depending on the user load.
