The Feel of Objective C

In the iPhone maelstrom, the 20-something old programming language Objective-C is getting a renaissance which many of us would not have believed possible. For many, this platypus of a programming language is now something we have to adopt and live with, being the basis for many new business.

In this talk Kresten Krab Thorup will take you through the background of Objective-C, where did it come from, and did it evolve to where it is today? Kresten will also take you through the fundamentals of the compiler and runtime system, why the language is such a strange mix, and discuss some of the problems that are known to be difficult to debug, and how to avoid them. All this, in search of "the feel" of the programming languages, its core idioms, language and core frameworks.

Kresten built the GNU Objective-C front-end and runtime system, and was senior engineer with responsibility for the language and core tools at NeXT Software before it was acquired by Apple
